Course:
The course is pretty technical with lots of turns and has a short
power climb.
Race:
I sat on the back of the pack for the first 21 of the 24 lap race.
Basically, I tried to use as little energy as possible. I timed a
couple of laps and saw that we were doing around 1:40 laps. My plan
was to try and take a filer on the last lap and see if I could hold
the pack off.
Skip forward to lap 22. Going up the power climb, I made my move. I
went from last to first with not too much effort. I then soft-pedaled
until someone came around me and slotted in to around 5/6th place. I
think I stayed around 4th through lap 23. On the power climb of the
last lap, I wussed out and didn't take my flier when I had the
chance. I was then quickly swarmed on the short downhill, which I
should have expected. Through the next couple of corners, I was
sitting 10-15th. Out of the last corner I was around 15 - 20th. I
just tried to maintain my position through the sprint, but may have
been passed by one or two riders.
I'm a little disappointed in myself with this race because I didn't
take my flier when I had the chance, and I didn't fight hard-enough
to maintain position when I knew I was going to sprint it out. I
probably should have moved to the front with 2 to go and taken a
flier early in the race to give myself the confidence about taking
the last lap flier.
I'll see if I can remedy this result tomorrow.
