What Tim saw:
Category: E4
Result: RESULT
Teammates: Wendy
Amazingly, I was able to wake myself up at 5:15, get on the road by
5:40, and register by 7:30. We were scheduled for 3 exciting 21-mile
loops.
The first lap was pretty boring. I placed myself at the back of pack
and talked with Wendy.
The second lap was about the same, but after the right onto Cattlemen
rd (~mile 33), the group wanted to take a pee break after 1.5 hours
of bike riding. Come on. Pee break? What are we, 10?
So I went to the front and soft-pedaled for a few minutes with a
couple other dudes. We eventually decided to go for it. If they
can't hold their bladder, that's their problem. At least they would
have an empty bladder when chasing us down. :)
We started our little pace-line (4 people) and were probably rolling
along at 26-28mph when a big group started to catch us. After we saw
them, we all stopped pedaling because we thought it was our group,
but as they passed us, we realized it was the 35+ 1,2,3 group. Doh.
At the same time, a group of 3 (from the 4s) bridged up to us. So we
were 7 strong, and decided to go for it again. We passed the 35+
1,2,3 group again, and started a hard rotating pace-line. At some
point someone flatted, and we were 6 strong. I definitely felt the
effects of losing that extra rider (~5 extra seconds of draft per
rotation). After the right past the feed zone (beginning of lap 3),
we saw a group catching us. Initially, I thought it was the 35+ 1,2,3
group, but everyone said it was our group. So with that, our break
was shut down after ~15 miles.
As they caught us, our break group proceeded to get yelled at for not
stopping while they had to use the restroom. But me, being all full
of adrenaline yelled back at them that they should learn how to hold
it. Good times.
Anyway, karma came back to bight me in the butt because I flatted
just before we went under the freeway 5 miles later.
On the way home I rewarded myself with a a $6 dollar guacamole burger
from Carl's Jr.. Man, that burger was good.
See you all at the Giro.
