What Tim saw:
Category: E4
Result: 8th of 50
I arrived in Stockton at 7:30 with plenty of time to warm-up for my
8:40 start time. The course is L-shaped and next to the Stockton
waterway. There are five rights and a left, but the second right is
more than 90 degrees. The third right and following left are so close
together it's almost like a chicane, but not quite.
The race was pretty easy for the first 5-10 minutes and I chilled at
the back. During the first prime lap I started to move up, but was
too far back to contest the sprint. On the second prime lap, I was in
a little better position, but crossed the line third. When the bell
rang for the third prime I was in the middle of the pack and there
was a group of two about 25 meters up the road. Between turns one and
two I took my flier and caught the duo in the chicane. After catching
their wheel, I took a few deep breadths before attacking them. I
crossed the line with a solid 50 meter gap on the pack to win a
voucher for a pair of voler arm or knee warmers.
I went to the back and recovered for the finish. During the third-to-
last lap in the last corner, someone went down and the field got all
strung out with gaps all over the place. I made it to the front group
with about 7 riders ahead of me - I'm not sure how many made it
behind me. On the last lap, 2 guys jumped on straight 2 and I
followed, but so did everyone else. Coming out of the last corner I
was probably around 6th, but I was pretty cooked and passed by a
couple of riders to finish 8th.
