What Tim saw:
Category: E4
Result: DNF
Teammates: None
So, for some reason I think I can climb. Experience tells us that is
not the case.
I didn't have anything better to do this morning (other than sleep)
so I decided to head down to Fort Ord at 6AM. The course is 10.5
miles long with rolling hills and a nasty climb (not the wall). I
remember seeing last year's race flyer vividly: "no Wall climb"-
excellent! The first 10 miles of that race I chilled in the pack,
until we made a sharp left and I saw a 10-15% incline, said Sh*t, and
was dropped. Life's tough.
Again, this year I thought, hey, maybe I'll make it up the climb with
the group. I'm in shape, so why not. Well, we do the 8 or so miles of
rollers; there actually pretty easy, no hard breathing, I can move up
if I want, etc (much better than last year). When we get to the
climb, I'm able to stay with the group about halfway up the climb,
then my lungs or legs reminded me that I don't climb, and I was
dropped, again. I was surprised too ;).
Well, I think I need to communicate with my legs and lungs a little
better about what I expect of them. We all seem to be on the same
page during crits, even ones with power climbs, but not races with
hills. I'm signed up for Patterson Pass next weekend, and I'm not
sure we'll be on the same page by then, but who knows....
At least there's Timpani tomorrow morning: flat, wide, and
rectangular - a non-climber's dream.
