The course is an 11 mile loop with about about 850' feet of climbing
per lap. The course starts with a downhill. Immediately at the
bottom, a 2 minute climb starts, followed by another 3-4 minute
climb. Then it's flat for a couple of miles, followed by a slight
incline back to the start/finish area.
This race seems to be my arch-nemesis. I've started this race for the
past 2 years, and I haven't been able to complete a single lap with
the group. I thought for sure this year would be different: I'm 10
pounds lighter than last year at this time, have some decent fitness,
and a couple of good results.
Start time was slated for 11:15, but they were running about an hour
late, so we didn't roll out till 12:15. Forget warm-up, it was almost
100 degrees, and no one even knew when we would actually start, so we
all just congregated at the start/finish area for an hour waiting for
our race to start.
We started the race with about 30-40 people and I took my place at
the back. As we went downhill, I'm almost spun out my 53/11 because
some (Ford?) dudes were drilling it. I wasn't working hard to stay in
the pack, I was just surprised when I didn't have any gears left. I
yo-yo'd off the back a couple of times on the downhill to try and
warm-up my legs for the first climb.
On the first climb, I passed 10 or so people. I was pretty tired at
the top, and knew I was in trouble for the second climb (about a mile
up the road). On climb 2 I popped about a couple hundred meters from
the top. After we crested the top, I started to work with a CSUS dude
to catch the pack. We didn't gain any ground and we both quit when we
hit the slight incline to the start/finish line.
I rolled into the parking lot, once again dejected by my performance
at this race.
Maybe next year I'll finish a lap with the group.
