German and I planned to attack with 5 to go and see if we could hold
a gap till the finish. It didn't quite work out.
All three of us had a bad starting position at the back. It took me a
couple of laps to make my way to the front, but on the way it was
very sketchy, myself included. People were locking up wheels and
diving corners; many many close calls.
With about 10 laps left, I went against Neil Harrington from webcor
for prime. He has a 4th at modesto, 1st at burlingame, 2nd at
vacaville, and plenty of points to upgrade. He led me out for the
prime and still beat me by half a wheel. Following the prime lap,
some dude tried to organize the 3 of us into a break because we had a
5 second gap from the prime effort. I was second in line, but
couldn't pull through-I was still recovering from the prime effort-so I guess I killed the break, and we were absorbed.
I stayed top 10, but with 3-4 laps to go, I started to lose
positions, and with 2 to-go I was 20th. I tried to make my way back
to the front, but on the backside straight (where I was planning to
get back to a top 5 position), there was a huge crash on my front-
left. I had to brake, then sprint up to the front group. After making
contact, I tried to grab a few extra positions, but probably rolled
in somewhere around 20-25.
So I've tried the "stay at the front tactic", and I conclude that I
just spend way too much effort trying to maintain my position and a
lot of time in the wind. I'm going to go back to the wheel-sucker-at-
the-back-of-the-pack tactic, then go to the front with 2-3 to go.
That's what the guy that won the race did...

Hey, I haven't written a race report in some time but, I gotta say
that I'm still on a natural high from doing that race. I implore the
rest of you to try and do that race next year if you've never done
it. The crowds were massive. As the day wore on, the crowds got
bigger. The amount of vendor and sponsor tents was really cool.
You felt like a rock star from all the cheering. I could'nt stop
smiling as I suffered out there. Having Germi and Dr. T-Rex out there
was fun. Watching both pull up towards the front as if they were
getting tv time for our sponsors was cool. I sipped a nice pilsner in
the back for the first race.
Second race had us timed at an average of 72-74 second laps. Pretty
damn fast. That course was crazy tight but, super fast and a bit
technical in certain areas.
It's my last race for awhile. I might do Giro de San Fran later this
summer but, that's about it. So, looking forward to reading other
reports.
1st race: 55th out of 78/2nd race: 41st out of 75
