What Tim saw:
Category: E4
Result: 5th of 60ish
Teammates: Wendy
I felt a little tired this week so I took Thursday and Friday off. On
Saturday I took it easy on the Spectrum ride by skipping the the maze
and the 84 section. As a result I felt pretty fresh this morning.
The Benicia course has 4 corners with all rights. The start/finish is
a slight downhill, the following straight is a very slight uphill.
The back-straight has a roller, with a Santa Cruzish climb. The third
straight is more or less flat.
Wendy and I sat on the back for most of the race. The pace was fast
enough going up the hill that it wasn't just a stroll around he park.
The first 25 minutes were pretty uneventful except for a crash, where
too many people tried to take the same line into turn 1.
With 6 to go, Wendy took a flier and held the pack off for about 4
laps, which was very impressive. I should have gone to the front and
tried to block for him, but I knew that I would be toast for the
finish if I did. Sorry Wendy. I'll make sure to do a good job of
blocking for you at the Chico RR. At least he won two primes.
With 3 to go, I started to work my way to the front, mostly on the
hill, as people were letting gaps form in front of them.
Coming out of turn 3 on the last lap, I was probably sitting 6th
wheel. German (our ex teammate) was actually pulling, but going kinda
slow. At this point I probably should have jumped, and tried out my
500 meter sprint, but I didn't think I'd make it. So, during the
sprint, I passed two riders and was passed by one to finish 5th.
For the Chico crit, I'm going to jump earlier and see what happens.
