What Ziggy saw:
Category: 2
Result: Mid-pack
Last weekend was the Menlo Park crit, a four corner fast crit in a business park. I went to this race hoping that the skies wouldn't open during our short 45 minute crit, and it didn't, though I did get a little rained on during my warmup. The race had about 35 riders with about 1/3 of the pack being represented by Solano and LG.
The Solano guys promised to attack the whole race, and they didn't disappoint. The only problem with their tactic was that once they got a break established, they didn't put out the extra effort to keep it going despite encouragement from the members of the breaks. I think I missed only the last break, but I did a large part of the work to bring it back with about 2 to go.
The sprint was shaping up well, the legs were good (afterall, it was only 45 minutes), and the teams that should have been doing the leadouts were doing the leadouts. Things fell apart with two corners to go when one of the leadouts fell apart and caused some bunching, then immediately after that, someone in the now bunched up front of the pack clipped a pedal and drifted left in front of me and forced me to brake a bit. I lost a handfull of spots and only managed to make up a few of them in the sprint and finished 11th with legs that could have won.
