District Road Race Championship, Fort Ord

What Santiago saw:

Category: Masters 35-39
Result: Off the back

Fort Ord, excellent place for racing.... but I guess this weekend was a little bit too hot for my legs.. I was there with Alan at the start line for the 35-39 race category, when we started spotting some good cat 1's and 2's on the field, Oh - Oh... this is going to be ugly... oh well lets see how far we get.

The first lap went ok up the first time up the wall, nasty short climb.. where we lost a few guys already, I managed to stay on the lead group. Second time around, again managed to stay up there with the big guys, but right on that 3rd lap (4 laps total = 60 miles) there was an acceleration at the feed zone.. bastards!!!... so I want and managed to get back on the lead group, but right when the whole thing regroup my right leg decided to stop working...big cramp...I had to slow down completely.. and of course at the same time there was another acceleration form the field, and there they went, disappearing in front of me.

Oh well I still had lap and half to go, I almost turned around and went back to the car, but slowly the cramp went away and I was caught by another 3 riders that got dropped on the hill. I worked with them and picked another two guys from the Cliff team, and we formed a group of 6. Lost one third time up the wall, and another 2 on the last lap, so I came in 3rd on the group, but no clue what my final placing was. We did pass a bunch of riders from the 1-2-3 field that was ahead of us.

Overall a good experience to be riding against all categories, and damm cramps, I was feeling pretty good up until them.

What Alan saw:

Category: Masters 35-39
Result: Off the back

I was a little out of my league, but got a nice ride in anyway. I got dropped from the main group on the last hill of the first lap. Rode with a few other guys for half of the second lap but then that fell apart. Hooked up with another rider for the third lap, then he dropped me on the last climb of the lap, and I time trialed it for the last 15 miles. It was a good thing there was a neutral feed, or I wouldn't have made it. I went through five bottles and four goos during the race, but didn't bonk! I'm sure a lot of riders dropped out of the race, so just by finishing I could do OK.
